About

Books Beyond Borders recycles books through resale and raw materials processing. Proceeds go to Project Schoolhouse, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of education, promote literacy, and improve health conditions for children in Central America.

Founded in 2003 by Thomas Barker, Books Beyond Borders was started to help fund educational investment in developing countries.  The idea for this work came from a formative experience teaching English in a small school in Costa Rica in 1997 that led to the construction of two additional classrooms there in 2000. This experience demonstrated what could be done with minimal funds matched by local resources.   Energized by the idea of continuing work in Nicaragua, Thomas founded Project Schoolhouse in 2004 as the charitable organization to undertake those education projects using funds from Books Beyond Borders.

Today, headquartered in Austin, Texas, our team of employees and volunteers work hard to provide you with affordable online pricing, fast and efficient shipping and expert customer service, while contributing the net proceeds of each sale to Project Schoolhouse —a 5013-c non-profit that works to improve the quality of education, promote literacy, and improve health conditions for children in Central America. You help Books Beyond Borders turn old books into new schools with every purchase.
